Objective: To demonstrate the importance of nutrition education and stimulate programs of this kind of intervention in the treatment and prevention of obesity. Literature review: Nutrition education can promote adoption of healthy eating practices and weigh appropriate maintenance through educational activities that evolves eating habits in all its complexity. It can create new senses and meanings to the act of eating and learn deeply more what feeding is about. Several tools of communication and expression can be used as learning methods, but it is necessary to evaluate the audience profile and site of application to determine adequately the activities to be implemented. There is receptivity, interest and need for nutrition education activities at all levels of health care. Actions taken in schools, spa and lounges showed positive effects on dietary habits. Conclusion: Nutrition education is released as a relevant strategy in prevention and treatment of obesity and it should be present in medical care, health programs and in different intervention sites. To do that, nutrition education needs to be well planned, executed and evaluated, and, besides, it’s a long process that requires continuity and permanence.
