Abstract:

It is not possible that groups that agree to be assimilated in international law are accepted as a minority. Minorities must have a consciousness to protect their identity. The minorities living in the north of Cyprus seem to have the consciousness of protecting their identity. Moreover, they are achieving this despite the lack of legal statutes in the Northern Cyprus Turkish Republic (KKTC). Therefore, it is very important to discuss the situation of the minorities in the north of Cyprus, taking into account the relevant international legal standards. In this framework, the study discussed the majority and minority groups in Cyprus in the historical process. In the framework of the national legal system of the KKTC, the legal and practical conditions of minorities have been assessed. The documents of international law transmitted to national law are also briefly included. In this context, minorities in the northern part of the island, except the Maronites, were also studied. Finally, the rights of the minority group named Maronit living in the KKTC have been discussed in various aspects. Focus on the situation of the Arab Christians named Maronit who live as minority groups in different states and look at the practice in the CCC is very important because it is a legal issue that is not addressed.
