Abstract:

Introduction: Benign tumors of the skin are one of the most common pathologies that can be seen in clinical practice. Scalp is one of the most common localization for the subcutanous skin lesions. Many benign tumors can be occured from different cells that forms the histological structure of the skin. The trichilemmal cyst, epidermoid cyst and lipoma are tumoral lesions that causes subcutaneous nodules in the scalp. This retrospective study examines,among 52 patients, 62 subcutaneous nodular lesions that excised totally from scalp.Material-method: In this retrospective study,62 subcutanous nodular lesions that excised totally from scalp, among 52 patients who were admitted to Dermatology and/or Neurosurgery Clinics of Sakarya University Training and Research Hospital between 2009 and 2011,are examined.Findings: 27 (51,9 %) of the patients were female, and 25 (48,1 %) were male. The mean age was found as 47,5 (ages 21-82). 34 (54,8 %) lesions were revealed as trichilemmal cysts, 16 (25,8 %) of them were revealed as lipomas and 8 (12,4 %) of them were found as epidermoid cysts, the rest of the pathologies were 2 (3,2 %) pilomatrixomas, and 2 (3,2 %) fibrolipomas. Result: Our study signified that trichilemmal cysts are the most common subcutaneous nodules that occures on scalp. Additionally, lipomas and epidermoid cysts were the other common subcutanous scalp lesions that can be seen in clinical practice.
