We assessed the efficacy of antigen -specific parenteral immunotherapy on allergic rhinitis with clinical parameters an rhinomanometry. Forty patients with perennial allergic rhinitis due to Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (D. pteronyssinus) and seasonal allergic rhinitis due to grass pollens were included in the study. Clinical parameters were measured before and after 6 and 12 months of immunotherapy by using daily diary cards. Nasal. obstruction was evaluated by measuring nasal reisistance. Active anterior rhinomanometry was performed in all patients before and after 12 months of immunotherapy to measure the nasal resistance. Subcutaneous injections injections of standardized extract of grass pollen and D. Pteronyssinus were used. injections were continued weekly and subjects achieved a maintenance dose during a 18 weeks period. The results were analyzed by means of Student test. Significant improvement occured in sympton scores 6 and 12 months after ummunotherapy compared to pretretment scores. (p < 0,0001). There was no statistically signifıcant reduction in total nasal resistance between rhinomanometric measurements performed before and 12 months after immunotherapy both in baseline conditions and following topical decongestion (p = 0.486 and p = 0.8046 respectively). We conclude that parenteral antigen - specific immunotherapy is an effective treatment method in ameliorating the symptoms of alergic rhinit in properly selected patients.
