The subject of Iskender Pala’s historical novel “Shah and Sultan” is about the battle between the Safavid shah Ismail Shah and Yavuz Sultan Selim Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. The novel describes these two powerful historical figures as victory ambitious enemies, with all their weaknesses and strength. The novel, where the conflict between Alevism and Sunnis is also discussed, talks about the fact that growing tension and conflict behind the political mask between these two Muslim and Turkish historical figures, was actually the difference between the sects. In the novel, the sectarian conflict between the Sunni king Yavuz Sultan Selim- Sultan of Ottoman Empire and the Shiite Kizilbash Safavid Shah Ismail, and the consequences of this conflict are given as unnecessary struggle of two rulers who risk everything for the sake of ruling. İskender Pala sheds light on how this struggle between two Turks and Muslim State leaders changed both their lives and consequences of sectarian separation. The author embodies the fatal dimension of the Chaldıran War, which appears to be the power struggle of the two rulers, but in fact was the war of the Two Brothers. Pala mentions the consequences of the wrong policy. We used various sources to analyze Iskender Pala’s historical novel “Shah and Sultan” where the sectarian difference was the main reason of the conflict.
