Abstract:

The Shemsi Ahmed Pasha Colony was built to the Architect Sinan by Shemsi Ahmed Pasha, who has been in functions in various state stages for many years, as it will be known from its name in the 16th century. This structure, in terms of its qualities, is one of the important structures in the Ottoman classical architecture that should be carefully focused on. What makes the structure privileged from other Sinan structures is that the functions are differently established in the plan settlement and built as the smallest building structure in scale. The smallness or asymmetricity of the settlement did not disvalue it, but the reverse parts were added to a whole and established in a balanced and harmonious manner in its context made it aesthetic and caused it to gain an important place in the silhouette of Üsküdar. This article focuses on the context of the structure and its change over time, specifically the architectural characteristics of the structure, the repairs it has undergone. Lastly, after the last restoration work of the structure, the current damage detection analysis was carried out. Use, moisture and structural disturbances have been detected. Furthermore, the causes of the disturbances related through the thermal camera-backed photos have been tried to be identified.

What makes the complex unique compared to other Sinan structures is that the functions are constructed in a different layout plan and also this complex of buildings is the smallest of all such Ottoman constructions. The fact that it is small or that the complex is asymmetric does not depreciate its value, but rather the parts that make up the whole by being shaped together in a balanced and harmonious way make it aesthetic and cause it to have an important place in the silhouette of Uskudar. In this article, the context of the structure and its change over time, the architectural features of the building and the repairs it has undertaken are emphasized. Finally, after the last restoration work, the current damage assessment analysis was carried out. Damage caused by use, moisture-induced deterioration and structural deterioration were determined. In addition, this study attempts to examine the reasons for the damage to the building by use of thermal camera assisted photographs.
