Abstract:

Interior and exterior dialectic in architecture has become essential for the definition and delimitation of living spaces, and different ideas were developed for interior-exterior relationships in 20th Century houses. This relationship is also reflected in the visual representations of architects. Visual representations provide important data for interpreting periodic differences between modernism and postmodernism. In this context, the study aims to examine the visual representations of architects on the concept of interior-exterior and to reveal the relationship between space and representation. A qualitative comparative analysis was conducted between the 6 residential buildings selected from the three specified periods and visual representation tools used by the architects in the design processes of these houses. Additionally, while conducting periodic examinations, the spatial equivalents of architectural discourses, discourse, and practice, and the textual and visual narrative of the building were examined, and the visual representations used by architects in their design processes were analyzed. As a result, the meanings that architects want to convey through their visual representation and how these representations are emphasized in different periods of internal-external relationship have been revealed.
