Subject of this study is a figurative grave stele which is found in a rescue excavation carried out by the Directory of the Izmir Archaeological Museum in the necropolis of Kyme. The Stele, broken in pieces, is an example for the “Naiskos Type” depicting the togate figure of a man (in the type of Dioskurides) flanked by two small sized servants. Type, iconography and style link it to a group of grave stelai produced in Smyrna during the Hellenistic Period, the production of which started during the second quarter of second century B.C. The distribution area ranges from Ephesos and Samos in the South to Byzantion. While it is obvious that the figure on the Kyme stele is influenced by the Smyrna group, the artistic quality can not compete with the Smyrna specimens. It will be argued that the Kyme stele was produced by a master working in a local workshop who was familiar with the Smyrna stelai in the last quarter of second century B.C.
