Abstract:

Nursal Ünsal represents one of the rare female virtuosos of her period in the performance of violin and viola. It is noteworthy that Ünsal blends instrument dominance, design of musical expressions and makams with violin/viola technical features in taksim performances. Ünsal was honored by the widely known tradition representatives of the period in which he lived, and was recognized nationally for his violin/viola performance and vocal performance. This research is based on the analysis of Ünsal's viola taksims. The aim of the research is to analyze the determined taksims with a structural method and to reveal the sentence structures, modal functioning features and which techniques on the instrument are used in the construction of this process in line with the analysis results. In the research, the document review method was used, the analysis of the data; format features, melodic features and viola technical features were evaluated. With the analyzed taksims, it has been observed that the makam constructions of the performer are formed with auditory variables (flavors) and by adhering to the tradition. In addition, it has been revealed that Ünsal's use of technical ornamental elements (glisando, trill, reverse acciaccatura, chromatic marches) in a balanced and original way. However, it has been observed that the performer reflects these practices with a simple construction in accordance with the traditional style. As a result, it has been determined that these creation behaviors reveal the musical identity of the performer and her is among the last representatives of the 21st century with a traditional style.
