The source of the changes in citizenship approaches appears as international migrations, wars, globalization and post-modern philosophy, and it is demanded that nation-state citizenship be replaced by approaches such as multicultural / constitutional / world / global citizenship. In addition, citizenship has come to the fore as an important starting point for the rights and freedom demands of pluralist ethnic / cultural identities, sexual preferences and social roles. Critics of national citizenship argue that it is now impossible to grasp the classical definitions and references of citizenship shaped by the dominant paradigms of the nation-state. The assumption that citizenship should be purified from social values is demanded to be replaced by theories such as constitutional patriotism. In modern nation-states, citizenship is defined as the legal and political relationship between the individual and the state. National identity, sovereignty, rights, nation-state and democracy constitute the components of modern citizenship. Each of these concepts is also inherent in a value. From this point of view, citizenship is also dependent on the said political and social values. In this paper, citizenship-identity relationship, which constitutes one aspect of the political identity dimension of citizenship, will be discussed. In this context, the approaches that citizenship should gain a universal form by isolating it from local, ethnic and cultural identities will be critically analyzed. The aim of this study is to discuss the political and social organizing assumptions and arguments of individual-based national citizenship and group-based multicultural / global / constitutional citizenship theories. Our basic assumption is that the notion of citizenship of the nation-state cannot be devoid of the historical and cultural values of the country. In this study, literature review method was used and support was obtained from critical discourse analysis.
