Abstract:

Introduction: It is known that in Brazil, quilombolas communities face problems associated with the lack of acess to health care. There are several factors for the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases and obesity is an explanatory factor. With this, we are looking for predictors to identify these risks. Objective: Based on the health measures of the residents of quilombolas of the Marajó Island in Pará, to show the influences between anthropometric variables and cardiovascular risk factors. Materials and Methods: 275 adults (18-59 years old) were included in a random sample of 450 residents in quilombolas communities, with a maximum sampling error of 4,12%. Non-parametric Tests were used, as well as: Explanatory Data Analysis and Regression and Correlation Analysis. Results: Men are more prone to hypertension, while women have higher values for body mass index and waist circumference. Blood pressure is associated with waist circumference and body mass index. Conclusion: It was possible to visualize that this population is at risk of acquiring cardiovascular diseases and that the waist circumference and body mass index together are excellent indicators for obesity, both are good cardiovascular risk factors.
