Abstract:

This study examines the reflection of issues related to Siirt to the national press in the period starting from the 1930s until 1960. In this context, the study was conducted on the example of Cumhuriyet newspaper. Research presented that the news about Siirt in many areas from infrastructure works to economy, from health issues to education and security issues took place in Cumhuriyet newspaper. Information was given in the newspaper about activities related to road and bridge construction. In this context, the developments regarding the bridge built on the Başur stream were mentioned in the newspaper. The construction of the bridge was described as a success of Turkish engineers in the Republic period. In terms of security, the visits of the First General Inspectors to Siirt and the developments in these visits were mentioned in the newspaper. Furthermore, the information given in the newspaper about the security incidents in Siirt province was analyzed in the study. Regarding the economy, oil exploration works carried out in the province of Siirt came to the fore in the newspaper. In addition to these, the news about the opening of a People’s House in Siirt, epidemics, the success of the Siirt football team and the natural events in Siirt were presented in the newspaper. In the study, all this information was examined in detail. Thus, a general framework was drawn for the issues that brought the province of Siirt to the country's agenda in the mentioned period.
