Abstract:

This study aimed at the retrospective assessment of intestinal parasites identified in output samples sent from 6565 patients with gastrointestinal complaints to the University's Faculty of Medicine's Parasitology Laboratory between June 2008 and December 2010. All output samples were focused directly with lugol and with the formol-ethyl acetate breakdown method after painted with trichrome and Kinyoun acid-fast coloring methods were considered microscopic. Selofan band preparations were also studied microscopically for the diagnosis of the hair. In 338 of the examined samples (5.1%), one or more parasites were identified. The distribution of the detected intestinal parasites was as follows: Enterobius vermicularis (n170%2. 5, Giardia intestinalis (n:109 %1,66), Entamoeba histolytica/dispar (n:19 %0.28), Blastocystis hominis (n:16 %0.24), Trichomonas intestinalis (n:14 %0.21), Entamoeba coli (n:13 %0.19), Taenia saginata (n:5 %0.07) and Trichomonas spp. (N: 1 to 0.1 per cent) Although in recent years there has been a decline in the incidence of intestinal parasites in our country, the results of this study have shown that intestinal parasites, especially Enterobius vermicularis and Giardia intestinalis, continue to be a major public health problem for our region.
