Camiler, Osmanlı Devleti’nde önemli bir konuma sahipti. Esas fonksiyonu ibadet etme mekânı olan camiler, bunun yanı sıra sosyal, siyasi ve ekonomik hayatın da bir parçasıydı. Öyle ki Osmanlı mahallesinde toplumsal merkez cami ve mescitlerdi. 19. yüzyıl Osmanlı Devleti’nin birçok sorunla uğraşmak zorunda kaldığı yıllardı. Bir yanda devletin modern sürece dâhil olmak ve tebaasını bir arada tutmak için yaptığı yenilikler bir yanda da gayrimüslim unsurların ayrılıkçı hareketleri vardı. Sosyal ve ekonomik hayata dair modern düzenlemeler yürürlüğe sokulurken geleneksel toplum yapısı da değişime uğruyordu. Bu durum bütün bir yüzyılın özeti gibiydi. Tüm bu karmaşık ve girift yapısı, gittikçe artan merkezi otoritenin varlığı içerisinde, camiler iktidar dışı unsurlara toplumsal taleplerin dile getirilmesinde bir alan açacaktı. Müslümanlar için kutsal mekânlar olarak kabul edilen camiler kitlelere ulaşma, eylemlere meşruiyet zemini oluşturma ve dikkatleri üzerine çekme konusunda önemli bazı faaliyetlerin merkezi olacaktı. Bu çalışmada Osmanlı Devleti açısından önemli bir zaman aralığında önemli bir kurumsal mekân olan camilerin, kamuoyu oluşturmadaki etkileri incelenecektir. Ancak bu faaliyetlerin faili devlet ve iktidar gücü değil onun dışında yer alan müslim ve gayrimüslim unsurlar olacaktır.
Mosques had an important position in the Ottoman Empire. Mosques, whose main function was as a place of worship, were also a part of social, political and economic life. The social center in the Ottoman neighborhood was mosques and masjids. The 19th century was a time when the Ottoman Empire had to deal with many problems. On the one hand, there were the innovations made by the state to be included in the modern process and to keep its subjects together, and on the other hand, there were separatist movements of non-Muslim elements. While modern regulations on social and economic life were being put into effect, the traditional social structure was also changing. This situation was like the summary of a whole century. In the midst of all this complexity and intricacy, and increasing centralization of authority, mosques would provide a space for non-governmental elements to voice social demands. Mosques, which are considered sacred places for Muslims, would be the center of some important activities in terms of reaching the masses, creating a basis for legitimacy for actions and attracting attention. In this study, the effects of mosques, which were an important institutional place for the Ottoman Empire in an important period of time, in creating public opinion will be examined. However, the perpetrator of these activities will not be the state and the ruling power, but the Muslim and non-Muslim elements outside it.
