Kelâm ilmi hicri birinci yüzyılda başlayan olaylar ve tartışmaların etkisiyle görünür olmaya başlamış, ikinci yüzyılda ise bir disiplin olarak ortaya çıkmıştır. Kelâm ilmi iman/akide esaslarını belirlememekle birlikte onları akli delillerle destekleyerek, hasımlarına karşı onları savunmayı ve inanç esaslarını beyan etmeyi amaç edinmiştir. Bu ilme farklı isimler de (usûlü’d-dîn, ilmü’t-tevhîd ve’s-sıfat, ilmü’l-istidlâl ve’n-nazar vd.) verilmiş ancak “kelâm” ismi daha yaygın olarak kullanıldığından ilimler arasında bu isimle yerini almıştır. Daha ilk çıktığı zamandan itibaren gerek metotlarının yanlış olduğu gerekse uygulayıcılarının değişik inanç ve kültürlerden etkilendiği iddialarıyla hem içeriden hem de dışarıdan eleştiri ve tenkitlere maruz kalmış, kötülenmiş ve yerilmiştir. Bu anlamda itikâdi mezhepler içeriden hadisçiler, mutasavvıflar, filozoflar da dışardan kelâm ilmine metot ve düşünce yönlerinden bazı eleştiriler yöneltmişlerdir. Bu eleştirilerin yapılmasında, kelâm ilminin nakle dayanmakla birlikte problemlerini akli istidlal yöntemleriyle ele almasının da rolü büyük olmuştur. “Ehl-i hadis” ve “Ehl-i rey” ayrışmasının belirginleştiği hicri ikinci yüz yılda Ehl-i rey’in fıkıhta kıyas yöntemiyle aklı kullanması özellikle Ehl-i hadis’in bu konuda onları tenkit etmesine neden olmuştur. Bunun yansıması itikâdî konularda da görülmüş fıkıhta aklın/reyin kullanılmasına tepki gösteren zihniyet benzer eleştirileri ve yaklaşımlarını itikâdî meselelerde de göstermişler, aklı inanç esaslarını savunmada bir araç olarak kullanan kelâmcıları da kendi yöntemlerinin doğal bir sonucu olarak eleştirmişlerdir.
