Abstract:

Death, which is an inevitable truth in our lives, is constantly occupying the human mind and is questioned throughout life. Many poets and writers also approach him from different sights by questioning death. When death is a acceptance, some are opposed to it. This subject, which is processed in many literary works, has been studied in the Russian literature (especially in the poetic field) as well as in the world literature. One of the poets in Russian literature who brought the subject of death to his poems was Joseph Aleksandrovich Brodsky (1940-1996). Iosif Brodski was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1987. The Russian American poet, experimental writer, translator and dramatist, I. Brodsky, has emerged in the forefront with his poet’s identity more than in writing. In addition to his own life, especially the social events in the period in which he lived, greatly influenced the formation of poetry, questioning the existence of man in his poems, he turned to his inner world. The poet who interpreted death in his poems from his own point of view, in many poems attracted attention to the fact of death and was concerned about death. The poet cannot in any way accept the truth of death, because the poet’s loss of his loved ones causes him to feel a deep sadness. In the study, through his poems, the poet’s view of life, worldview, experience, as well as the influence of social events in that period, will be tried to reveal, especially the perception of death and the processing of the subject of death.

The existence of death, which is seen as an inevitable reality of our lives, constantly occupies the human mind and is questioned throughout life. Poets and writers, who discuss the phenomenon of death, approach to this reality from a variety of perspectives. In some cases, this may be an accepting, in the others it becomes a resistance. The subject of death, discussed in many literary works, has an important place in Russian literature, (especially in the field of poetry), as well as in all of the world literatures. Joseph Aleksandrovich Brodsky (1940-1996) was one of the poets who carried the theme of death to his poems in Russian literature. Joseph Brodsky, who gained the 1987 Nobel Prize in Literature, became internationally well-known. Brodsky, who is a Russian and American poet, essayist, translator and playwright, came into prominence with his identity as a poet rather than his authorship. Not only his personal life but also the social events in his period had a great influence on his poetic style and he directed to human’s inner world by questioning the existence of man in his poets. Brodsky interpreted the death in his own way, drew attention to the subject of death in different poems and worried about it. Poet can’t accept the fact of death because he lost his loved ones and caused him to feel deep sorrow. Through these poems, his perspective on life, his worldview, his experiences from his own life, as well as the influence of social events in that period will be discussed in this study and especially will be pointed out the theme of death.
