Abstract:

May and Black is a novel of Halit Ziya Uşaklıgil's literary statement of the Literature of the Fünûn. The person in the center of the work is Ahmet Cemil, a representative of the Generation of Fünûn. His dreams, his love, his hopes, his thoughts about poetry form the theme fiction of the novel. The main theme of the novel is the other person’s dreams and disappointments, i.e. unrealised dreams. Ahmet Cemil takes responsibility for the survival of his sister and mother when his father dies in the early years of his youth. Ahmet Cemil, who is deeply feeling the pain of fatherlessness, refugees to his mother. He was under the wings of his mother throughout the Roman. Ahmet Cemil, who is a dream-destroyed, wants to take his mother with him at the end of the novel and leave Istanbul on a night boat. Ahmet Cemil, who looks at the sea on the roof of the ship, refuses to commit suicide with his mother’s voice. In some ways, Ahmet Cemil, who is alone with death, survives thanks to his mother. It is possible to explain Ahmet Cemil's abandonment of suicide by looking back to his mother. Here, Jung's animation archetype and the desire to return to mother will also take advantage of the rebirth of Ahmet Cemil. In this study, the aim is to reveal the theme of "Return to Mother" in the novel May and Black.
