Our study was planned to evaluate the effect of short-term standard physiotherapy program on the pain level, functional disability and psychological condition in patients with chronic low back pain. 30 patients, who were housewives aged 25-60, diagnosed with chronic low back pain and enrolled in a physiotherapy programme, were included in the study. The patients’ socio-demographic data were recorded. Literacy criteria were taken into consideration. A standard physiotherapy programme comprising a total of 10 sessions of hot pack, ultrasound and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation over a five-day period was applied to the cases. Pain was assessed with Visual Analogue Scale, functional level with Revised Oswestry Functional Disability Questionnaire, and psychological state with Beck Depression Inventory. Measurements were taken twice, once before and once after treatment. In the assessments made before and after treatment, when the pain level values of individuals participating in the study were examined following the physiotherapy programme, a significant statistical reduction in pain levels compared with before the physiotherapy programme was observed (p<0.001). When disability levels and psychological state prior to and following the physiotherapy programme were compared, a significant difference was found (p<0.001). According to our findings, the physiotherapy programme increases functional ability by decreasing pain and disability level, and provides improvement in psychological state by reducing depression levels in patients with chronic low back pain.
