Abstract:

Objective: investigate and compare the prevalence of overweight and obesity in women aged 18 to 60 from Downtown and Olaria in the city of Cruzília, Minas Gerais, in the basic health, units according to the socioeconomic status. Materials and Methods:Assuming the theoretical (literature review) and a field research with a random sample obtained on the basics of one hundred (100) women, fifty (50) from Downtown and fifty (50) from Olaria, a questionnaire containing the following variables: was used gender (female), age (18 to 60 years), education, socioeconomic status ( monthly and family income, number of taxpayers in income and number of people living in income), service time, housing, and BMI. Results: According to the results of measuring the BMI the women from Olaria had a higher prevalence of overweight (40%) compared to those from Downtown (36%). Discussion: Considering the socioeconomic status of participants: higher level and higher education, less overweight/obesity. Overweight/obesity were defined as dependent variables compared to the age, education and income variables. Conclusion: There is a prevalence of overweight/obesity in view of the socioeconomic status of the female population from Olaria. The results suggest preventive actions and interventions that include diet and physical activity variables to prevent and improve the quality of life of the population questioned.
