Abstract:

This study aims to reveal the distribution of the learning outcomes regarding the skills to recognize stereotypes and prejudices to the learning areas of the Social Studies Curriculum and their reflections in social studies textbooks. The study used the document analysis method, which is one of the qualitative research methods. With the document analysis method, first of all, the skill to recognize stereotypes and prejudices, which is one of the learning outcomes in the social studies curriculum, was examined in the learning areas of the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th-grade social studies. Then, the skill was examined in the texts, activities, and visuals within the units for the relevant learning areas in the social studies textbooks. The study data were analyzed using descriptive analysis and content analysis techniques. According to the findings of the study, the skill to recognize stereotypes and prejudices was included in the learning areas of "Individual and Society" and "Global Connections" in the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th grades. When the units of the social studies textbooks addressing learning outcomes for the skill to recognize stereotypes and prejudice were examined, it was observed that the concepts of stereotype and prejudice were discussed in the theoretical dimension and relevant examples, though not enough, were presented; however, it was concluded that there were no activities for the relevant skill to involve the student actively in the learning process.
