Abstract:

The book is a very important tool that supports children’s development areas, expands their fantasy worlds and prepares them for the outside world. This is why it is very important for children to be introduced to the book early. Today, especially with the influence of popular culture, it is often found in books that are artistically and literaryly invaluable but contain attractive characters for children. The majority of parents prefer these books for their children. However, books must be proper to support children’s developmental areas. This study is aimed at determining the criteria for the selection of books for mothers with children aged 3-6 years. The sample of the study was made by a total of 260 mothers who continued to their independent kindergartens associated with the Ministry of National Education located in the center of the province of Chankırı. The research data was collected with the "Personal Information Form", the "Pre-School Teachers and Parents' Child Book Selection (3-6 Years) Criteria Scale". In the analysis of the data, the frequency analysis was used by the Mann Whitney U and Kruskal Wallis H tests from nonparametric tests. The study found that the majority of mothers read books to their children, went to a bookstore together, got their children’s ideas when they bought books, got the most stories for their children, and in the family they read the most books to their children were mothers. It is also determined that the criteria for the selection of the child book for mothers are significantly different according to the state of learning, the state of parenting, the state of work, the child’s gender, age, birth order and the age of receipt of the first book for the child (p<.05).
