Abstract:

Distance education has become mandatory due to the Covid 19 pandemic that spread all over the world in 2020. In the field of education, one of the most affected education stakeholders is teachers. It is possible to say that especially teachers of science fields (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) were significantly affected by this process. In this period, it is important how teachers, who are stakeholders in education, carry out this process. In this study, the difficulties experienced by physics teachers during the distance education period were investigated. In the study, case study design, one of the qualitative research designs, was used. The sample of the study consists of 20 physics teachers working in public and private schools in different regions of Turkey. A semi structured interview and observation form was used as the data collection tool. Since the data collection phase was during the epidemic period, the interviews were conducted remotely. During distance education, problems arising from students, teachers, school administration and materials have been identified. In addition to these problems, some difficulties in ensuring equality of opportunity and technical problems in general were also mentioned. A number of problems have emerged in terms of physics course content. These problems are grouped under two main headings. These were determined as topics that physics teachers have difficulty explaining and topics that students have difficulty understanding. It has been observed that the subjects that physics teachers find difficult to explain are electricity and magnetism, force and motion, optics, energy and waves. When we look at the topics that students have difficulty understanding, it has been determined that they are electricity and magnetism, matter and its properties, force-motion, angular momentum, linear momentum, torque-balance, energy. As a result of the analysis of the data collected within the scope of the study, some suggestions for research and practice were made in order to contribute to future studies.
