AIMWe aimed to evaluate the characteristics of motorcycle accident victims, factors leading to accidents and the treatment options.METHODSMotorcycle accident victims admitting to the emergency department of our hospital during the seven month period between February and July 2009 was evaluated in this prospective study. A standard preformed form was used for each victim. It questioned the parameters including age, sex, how the accident happened, the victim’s status as a rider or a passenger, helmet use status, alcohol intake, speed of the vehicle during the accident and injured sites. In additionAn injury severity score was filled for each participant.RESULTSOf the 69 victims in 59 motorcycle accidents there were 62 male and 7 female. The mean age was 25.6 ± 8.1 and the mean injury severity score was 6.49±5.8. There were rider and passenger victims. In 72.4% of the cases the motorcycle crashed onto another vehicle. Only 30 victims were using helmet and 2.8% of the victims had drunken.There were 68 and 14 injury sites in 59 drivers and 10 in passengers, respectively. Of 69 victims 57 were treated in the emergency department without hospitalization; however 11 had to be hospitalized. We lost one patient with thoracic injury. Extremities injuries were the most frequently injured sites and followed by head injuries. CONCLUSIONYoung males are most commonly involved in motorcycle accidents and the extremities are most frequently injured organs.
