Abstract:

In the re-production of social norms that lead to the power to establish domination over the individual, the media plays a very important role. While the bio-power that Foucault described as "an invisible, a new form of power" is implemented, the ideological elements that the media has influenced in the news statements are noted. Foucault’s conceptions, such as the essence-power, the forms of power (pastoral power/bio-power), the control communities, can offer new perspectives in the structure of health policies. In the study, discussing the concepts of power, anatomic-politics, bio-politics and bio-power, it was suggested that academics in the field of health should position themselves as scientists who are able to look critically and evaluate in this context, not as individuals producing theories and speeches in the service of the dominant ideology, but as scientists who believe in the truth and the truth. The study’s assumptions are that the new form of power, the bio-power, was frequently found in health practices in the 21st century and that the newspapers were the translator of this form of power according to their own ideologies. The aim of this study is to ensure the understanding of the role of the media, in the field of health, in the re-production of social norms. For this purpose, Michel Foucault’s analysis of the concept of power has been analyzed by addressing health news that include health practices in our country. As an example in the study; in the Universal, Sabah and New Akit newspapers; abortion prohibition, 3 children encouraged, smoking-alcohol prohibition and obesity salt-sugar prohibition news followed. As a method, the critical speech analysis was applied in the context of Foucault’s concept of bio-power. The scans and analyses of literature have revealed how the newspapers, the news and the ideologies of different ideologies formed in the re-production of the social norms that lead to the power's imposition on individuals. According to this, while the Sabah Gazette reports the dominant ideological statements, it has been found that the Universal Gazette has made statements in accordance with its socialist ideology and that the New Akit Gazette uses statements that serve the conservative ideology.
