Abstract This article studies an autographic manuscript of the comedy, El satisfecho, signed by the playwright Luis Belmonte in Seville, on July 24 1634. The document provides sound information about its journey through time, from the moment when it obtained its representation permit in Lisbon, in 1639, until it appeared in Toro, property of Santiago Manteca. The interest of the manuscript is very high due to the great number of probationes pennae that it contains, of very varied content and unrelated to the world of theatre. These writing exercises, coming out of Santiago Mantecas pen, reveal that the secretary was a man concerned about the documental and formulaic world. His lack of interest in keeping the document clean may indicate, on the one hand, that the comedy was not successful any more, and, on the other, Mantecas likely disconnection from the theatrical world.
