Orta Çağ’da kilisenin esareti altında olan beden temrinleri, Rönesans ile yayılan fikir akımlarının beraberinde zincirlerini kırarak Avrupa’da yeniden gelişim göstermeye başlamıştır. Başlangıçta sadece üst sınıflarca askeri ve tıbbi fonksiyonları ile varlığını sürdüren beden faaliyetleri, dönem düşünürlerinin Antik Yunan’a öykünmesiyle askerî, dini ve toplumsal olmak üzere 3 kategoride varlığını ortaya koymuştur. Bu süreçte ticaretin gelişmesi burjuva sınıfını ortaya çıkarmış eğitim ise Antik Yunan Klasik Çağ’ında olduğu gibi zorunluluk olarak görülmeye başlanmıştır. Beden eğitiminin basit formlarda burjuva ve aristokratların eğitim müfredatlarına dahil edilmesi ise gelişimi hızlandırmıştır. Rönesans, Reform ve Hümanizm akımlarının üzerine Aydınlanma dönemine geçilmesi ile bedenin eğitimine yönelik izler kilisenin egemenliğinden sıyrılarak İngiltere’de Sanayi Devrimi sonucunda modern formlarını oluşturmuştur. Fransız Devrimi ile gelen köklü değişimler, beraberinde dönemin filozof, yazar ve aydınlarının ortaya attıkları fikirler nezaretinde şekillenerek Avrupa ülkelerinde önemli etkiler bırakmıştır. Tüm bu düşünceler, zihnin, bedenin yardımı olmaksızın bir şey başaramayacağı noktasında birleşerek, Almanya’da philantroplar vasıtasıyla sadece teorik olmaktan kurtulan derslerle geniş bir uygulama zemini bulmuştur. Böylece jimnastik faaliyetlerinin önemi anlaşılmış ve eğitim sistemi içerisine beden faaliyetleri dahil edilmiştir. Edinilen bilgi birikimi ise asıl etkisini sonraki yüzyıllarda Avrupa’da ortaya çıkan beden eğitimi akımlarında ve modern sporların doğuşunda göstermiştir.
In the Middle Ages, the bodies under the church's custody began to re-develop in Europe by breaking their chains along with the ideas flowed with the Renaissance. The physical activities, which in the beginning only existed by the upper classes with their military and medical functions, revealed the existence of periodic thinkers in three categories: military, religious and social, with the history of ancient Greece. In this process, the development of trade revealed the bourgeois class and the education began to be seen as an obligatory as in the Ancient Greek Classical Age. The incorporation of body education in simple forms into the educational curricula of the bourgeois and aristocrats has accelerated the development. The transition to the Age of Enlightenment and the traces of the body’s education on the Renaissance, Reform and Humanism flows have separated from the church’s domination and formed its modern forms in Britain as a result of the Industrial Revolution. The radical changes that came with the French Revolution have left significant influences in their European countries, shaping the ideas of the philosophers, writers and illuminates of the time.
