Abstract:

This article aims to give information about the process of celebrating the anniversary of the Preveze Naval Victory, one of the most important naval battles of the Ottoman period, first recognized as "Barbarossa Commemoration Day" and then "Naval Day". The process of celebrating the Preveze Naval Victory, which had not been mentioned as a ceremony for many years, started with the conviction of Abidin Daver, who came to the fore with the identity of journalist, bureaucrat, sports club president and deputy, to his close circle at the upper levels of the military and civil bureaucracy. In this context, the first ceremony was celebrated under the name of “Barbarossa Commemoration Day” on September 27, 1938, on the 400th anniversary of the Naval Victory of Preveze. However, Abidin Daver made attempts to celebrate this ceremony under the name of “Naval Week” with events that would spread over a week. However, these attempts were not successful, only the name of the ceremony was changed to "Naval Day" in 1948. The ceremony, which was celebrated under this name until 1963, started to be celebrated under the name of "Naval Forces Day" since 1964, and this tradition continues today. The process mentioned in this study was evaluated and analyzed using archive documents and newspapers of the period.
