Erzurum ilinin kuzey ilçelerinden Tortum, Erzurum'a bağlı olmakla birlikte, Karadeniz Bölgesinin Doğu Karadeniz Bölümünde ve Çoruh Irmağı'nın önemli kollarından birisini meydan getiren Tortum Çayı Vadisinde yer almaktadır. Doğu Anadolu’yu Karadeniz ve Kafkasya’ya bağlayan tarihi yollar üzerinde bulunması, ilçenin stratejik önemini artırmış ve bu durum tarih boyunca çeşitli milletlerin bu coğrafyaya yerleşmelerine neden olmuştur. Bölgede tarih öncesi dönemlerden itibaren başlayan yerleşim faaliyetleri günümüze kadar devam etmiştir. Tortum ve çevresinde çok sayıda tarih öncesi ve tarihi dönemlere ait arkeolojik merkezler mevcuttur. Bu merkezlerde yapmış olduğumuz incelemeler sonucunda ilçenin ilk olarak kalkolitik dönem itibariyle yerleşim gördüğünü ve kesintisiz yerleşime sahne olduğu anlaşılmaktadır. Bu çalışma iki aşamada incelenmiştir. Birincisi bölgede gerçekleştirmiş olduğumuz yüzey araştırmaları sırasında tespit edilen İlk Çağ'a ait olan kale ve höyüklerin incelenmesi bir diğer aşamada ise bu merkezlerde elde etmiş olduğumuz keramiklerin değerlendirilmesidir. Bunların neticesinde bölgenin Eski Çağ tarihini aydınlatmak hedeflenmektedir.
From the northern districts of the Erzurum province, Tortum is linked to Erzurum, but is located in the Eastern Black Sea Division of the Black Sea Region and in the Tortum Tea Valley, which challenges one of the important arms of the Choruh River. The historic pathway that connects Eastern Anadolu to the Black Sea and the Caucasus has increased the strategic importance of the district, and this situation has led to the settlement of various nations in this geography throughout history. The settlement activities in the region began from prehistoric periods until today. There are many archaeological centers of prehistoric and historical periods in Tortum and its surroundings. The results of the studies we have done in these centers are clear that the district first saw settlements from the calcolite period and that it was a scene of uninterrupted settlements. This study has been studied in two stages. First, the study of the castles and hills that belong to the First Age, which was discovered during the surface research we conducted in the area, in another stage is the evaluation of the ceramics we obtained in these centers. The aim of this is to illuminate the ancient history of the region.
