Abstract:

The premise underlying the sound symbolism theory is that there is a non-arbitrary connection between speech sounds and meaning. Since Kratylos' work regarded as the first critical examination of Plato's sound symbolism, sound symbolism has been the focus of numerous academic fields, particularly philosophy, linguistics, and psychology. The fundamental preoccupation of the conventionalism and naturalism movements has been the sound symbolism theory. Conventionalism denies the idea that a word's form and meaning are related, contrary to naturalism. These two opposing viewpoints have engaged in a vigorous debate throughout the history of sound symbolism. From a diachronic standpoint, this work has identified the sound-symbolic components of Old Anatolian Turkish. Sound symbolism relies on diachronic research to illuminate the development of the relationship between form and meaning throughout history. The paper taking into account the history and typology of sound symbolism, suggests a novel strategy that takes sound symbolism into account as a way of morphological derivation. The typology of sound symbolism is constrained in this new method to ideophones, phonesthemes, onomatopoeic words, and interjections. The Old Anatolian Turkish sound-symbolic components were sampled using the information from the research in the study's result section.
