Ege ve Çanakkale Bölgelerinden seçilmiş 31 adet ayva (Cydonia vulgaris Pers.) çeşit ve tipinin fenolojik ve pomolojik özelliklerinin belirlenmesi, böylece üstün özelliklere sahip tiplerin seçilmesi amacıyla bu çalışma ele alınmıştır. Ayvalarda toplam 33 özellik üzerinde çalışılmış ve bunları 11 tanesi çeşit seçiminde kriter olarak ele alınmıştır. Verim, boğuculuk, sululuk, aroma, tat, et dokusu, et sertliği, irilik, meyve şekli, parlaklık ve pas miktarı ayva seçiminde ayva seçiminde ele alınan kriterlerdir. Bunlara göre; 6, 2159, 1, 2157, 7, 2153, 27, 2163 nolu tipler en ümitli ayva çeşit adayları olarak belirlenmiştir
