Pneumonia is defined as inflammation and consolidation of lung tissue due to an infectious agent. Pneumonia that develops outside the hospital is consdered community acquired pneumonia (CAP). The etiological diagnosis of CAP in around 50 % of cases can be made. In our study we aimed to investigate laboratory and microbiological studies for identifying etiologic agent in CAP. One hundred and twenty patients (79 men and 49 women) with mean age of 42.6 years were included in this study. In 49 patients Gram staining and culture of sputum, in one patients hemoculture, in one patients Gram staining and culture of pleural fluid, in 5 patients serological tests and in 4 patients direct Fluoresence antibody tests were investigated. According to our study; the etiologic diagnosis of pneomonia was difficult.
