İnsanlık dönem dönem çeşitli hastalıklarla mücadele etmiştir. Günlük hayatın içinde bu denli büyük bir yeri olan hastalık, edebiyatta da kendisine fazlasıyla yer bulur. Dünya edebiyatındaki birçok yazar hastalığı doğrudan ya da dolaylı olarak çalışmalarına taşır. Türk edebiyatında da en çok işlenen konulardan biri olan hastalık, şiir, hikâye, tiyatro gibi edebi türlerin konusu haline gelir. Bu tema, Tanzimat dönemiyle Türk edebiyatına giren roman türünün de mevzusu haline gelir. Yazarlar, kendilerini veya yakınlarını esir alan hastalıkların kötü etkisini yazarak gidermeyi amaçlar. Birçok yazar gibi Türk edebiyatının önemli isimlerinden biri olan Halit Ziya Uşaklıgil’in romanlarında da hastalık teması geniş yer tutar. Yazarın ailesinde ve çevresinde birçok hastalıklı insanın varlığı bu temayı romanlarında sıkça kullanmasına neden olur. Bir anlamda Halit Ziya Uşaklıgil, bu hastalıklara ve peşi sıra yaşanan kayıpların acılarına eserlerinde yer vererek hafifletmeye çalışmıştır.

In a sense, Halit Ziya Uşaklıgil has tried to relieve these diseases and the pain of the losses that occur in their works.
