Abstract:

The aim of the current study is to investigate the levels of academicians’ self-efficacy beliefs in oral communication in foreign language and examine their self efficacy beliefs according to the variables of gender, the school or course  where  they learn a foreign language  and being abroad. The study was designed as a descriptive survey of quantitative research designs. This study is predicated on a descriptive survey of quantitative research designs. The research group consisted of 16 males and 14 females, a total of 30 academicians working at different departments of a state university in Turkey. With this aim, the data was collected through the use of Demographic Information form and the Scale for Academics’ Self-efficacy Beliefs in Oral Communication in a Foreign Language developed by Özer, Çakır and Uzun (2019). Additionally,  qualitative  data  was  collected  via  semi-structured interviews with two academicians.The reliability coefficients of the Scale for Academics’ Self-efficacy Beliefs in Oral Communication in a Foreign Language was found to be .98. The quantitive data were collected through online survey in the fall semester of 2020/2021 academic year. Mann Whitney U testi and Kruskal Wallis H were used for the analysis of the data. The study displayed that academicians had moderate level of self efficacy beliefs in oral communication in foreign language learning. Moreover, the results revealed significant difference between academicians’ self efficacy beliefs and gender since male academicians had higher level of self efficacy beliefs than the female academicians. However; no significant differences were found in their self efficacy beliefs with respect to the school or course where they learned a foreign language and being abroad.
