Abstract:

Abu Hamid al-Gazali is a polymath, who expresses his views on different sciences and topics. Besides, he has written so much. To comment on his views, his different books must be referred to. Many unsystematically tackled themes by al-Ghazali were neglected and one of them is the teaching that every theory is a practice and every practice is not a theory. al-Ghazali’s theory-practice teaching is not comprehensively examined and this is among the most important reasons why this teaching is not seriously analyzed. There are serious sources on the topic in al-Ghazali’s Ihya Ulum al-Din. Mostly is the Bagdad period books examined for al-Ghazali’s philosophy. al-Ghazali is on the view that every practice can be reached through theory and every theory can be reached through the idea. Also, al-Ghazali says it cannot be reached directly from theory to practice and he establishes third teaching which is named as a state. As a conclusion theory, state and practice are all the productions of the idea. Al-Ghazali stresses the unity of all these concepts, for he is a thinker of unity.
