Obesity is a serious public health problem that reaches almost the entire world. Aiming at analyzing the postoperative weight changes of the bariatric surgery, the present study made a comparison between the results of scientific articles that demonstrated the weight loss of patients in postoperative of bariatric surgeries. The Methodology used was a systematic review. It was performed a data base field search at PubMed, Scielo and Bireme, using the following indexing terms for the search: bariatric surgery, morbid obesity, gastroplasty, gastric bypass, cirurgia bariátrica, obesidade mórbida, gastroplatia. The criteria used to the article inclusion in the research were: studied sample, percentage of female patients, patients’ average age, preoperative BMI, postoperative weight changes, postoperative analysis period, and surgical technique used and, study conclusion. We selected 28 articles being 12 national, 1 national published at an international periodic and 15 international articles from the last 10 years. It was then possible to conclude that the studies published about bariatric surgery in Brazil and around the world are very heterogeneous in the way they describe weight loss, during the period of postoperative analysis and are also very different in relation to the surgical technique used which, several times, is not specified in the article the way it was done, making very difficult to perform any comparison between the articles. To facilitate comparison between the results of those populations an international protocol for the publication of results of population in bariatric surgery postoperative should be created.
