Abstract:

Throughout history, countries have traded with each other and this trade has increased welfare. While international trade has become a necessity for some countries due to geographical reasons, lack of resources or lack of technology, it has been preferred for some countries due to production costs and quality advantages. Growth in manufacturing and the growth of international trade, along with the developing transportation infrastructure, have led to an increase in energy consumption due to fossil fuels, and besides a significant increase in greenhouse gas emissions, which is one of the important elements of global warming. For this reason, it has become important to research the effects of international trade on the environment in recent years despite its positive effects on development and prosperity. Purpose: The aim of this study is to examine the reasons for the change of greenhouse gas emissions by countries with different income groups, especially within the framework of international trade. Methodology: A total of 186 countries were examined for the years 1998-2020 by using green house gass emissions data taken from World Bank Statistics. Standart deviations are classified due to different income groups and the anlysis are done by using logarithmic data. Findings: It was determined that depending on the increase in welfare level, exports and imports of goods/services were effective variables of the change of greenhouse gas emissions. Originality: Since the study is inclusive by 186 countries and classified due to income groups, the relation between green house gass emissions and international trade will provide countries giving direction to their foreign trade policies and also this study will may be beneficial for further sectoral studies
