Abstract:

Jamaika Kincaid’in ilk kitabı ve ilk kısa öykü koleksiyonu At the Bottom of the River, okuyucuya, çocukluktan yetişkinliğe doğru yol alan genç bir Antiguan kızın gerçek ve hayali dünyasının birleşimini yansıtan özlü ve lirik tarzda bir eserdir.

Abstract:

The first book and the first short story collection of Jamaica Kincaid, At the Bottom of the River, is a concrete and lyrics-style work that reflects the combination of the real and imaginary world of a young Antiguan girl who leads to the reader from childhood to adulthood. The short stories in the book are connected because they offer some pieces of the life of an unnamed woman narrator. The purpose of this article is to describe some of the most important characteristics that it is believed to be proof that the work can bear the title of "nature poem". During the study, it was also seen that the work could be regarded as a kind of "poetic generation". But I did not see any trouble in studying the stories from the point of view of both the "poetry" and the "poetry generation" in terms of being both "pronouncing" species, in other words, when both species were considered to exceed the boundaries of both the poem and the generation, and therefore, as they were melez species, in terms of the poem generation. In short, the purpose of this study is to reveal the characteristics of the manuscript in the paper. When the images, currents, incentives and symbols included in the stories in the collection were studied, it was observed that these vocal arts served to illustrate the search for identity of the main character and the image of self that he eventually gained. Therefore, the study also emphasizes the subject of identity search that Kincaid has shown in his book with the use of images and symbols.

The Search For An Identity In Consecutive Verses In Jamaica Kincaid’s At The Bottom Of The River

Abstract:

Jamaica Kincaid’s first book and first short story collection At the Bottom of the River is a work which offers the reader a pithy and lyrical style by which the author reflects the merging of the real and imaginary world of a young Antiguan girl growing into adulthood. The curt stories in the book are inter-related since they relate to some slices of the life of an unnamed female narrator. The aim of this article is to depict some of the most significant features which are believed to prove that the work can bear the epithet “prose poem”. During the study it has been observed that the work can also be considered to be a type of ‘poetic prose’. Yet, considering that both ‘prose poem’ and ‘poetic prose’ are close to each other in the sense that both of them are the genres “jumping the fence”, in other words, both genres exceed the boundaries of both poetry and prose, and thus that they are hybrid genres, I have seen no drawbacks of analyzing the collection in the perspective of prose poem. Briefly, the aim of this study is to reveal the poetic features in the work written in prose. When the images, metaphors, similes and symbols are explored in the stories in the collection, it has been observed that these figures of speech serve to illustrate the main character’s quest for identity and her depiction of her self which she gains at the end. For this reason, the study concurrently highlights the theme of search for an identity which is revealed in Kincaid’s book by means of the use of images and symbols.
