Abstract:

The globalized world order, the stronger neo-liberal policies have since the 1970s revealed restricted/closed settlements in many parts of the world in different periods of time. With globalization, the increasing development of transport and communication technologies, the rapid growth of the population, the risks in the city and the increased fear of this situation, the multiplication of polarization between social and economic classes, people are adopting divided ways of life. As a reflection of the spatial layer of this concept, residential settlements are built as weak settlements, or the relations with the city with the particles within the city, which have physical sharp boundaries, or are converted to this with the boundaries later created in the old settlements. This condition of limited/closed settlements is an indicator of social and spatial separation, social polarization. The objective of the study is to question whether limited/closed settlements can be integrated into the city through a different philosophy of improving their relations with public spaces. Public spaces are areas where people can encounter, see and know each other, and in this imagination the relationship between residential and public spaces must be well-established. These areas are considered as areas where people can prevent their alienation and reduce polarization. This means that social separation can be reduced. As a result of the literary work and field work in the article, it was tried to reveal the criteria to be taken into account to strengthen social relationships in the public spaces. It is questioned by the study of how the relationship between housing and public spaces can reduce social polarization and improve social relationships.
