Abstract:

The temettuat (profit tax) registers have important resources that enable us to better understand the social and economic history of the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century. These registers are census records detailing the users' assets, income, and tax amounts. The agricultural land use and productivity of Ağsaklar/Aksaklar village in 1845, one of the villages of the Gediz district of Kütahya, are discussed in this study. The research was based on the temettuat book 07922 from Ağsaklar village, dated Hijri 29 Zi'l-hijce 1261 (Gregorian 29 December 1845). All the data in the temettuat register of Ağsaklar was first transcribed, and then the data was tabulated for better understanding. This study, which aims to tabulate and evaluate the records in the temettuat register of Ağsaklar village, consists of four parts, including the introduction. In the introduction, information is given about the temettuat registers, their use, and their importance. In addition, in this section, mistakes in a master's thesis about the temettuat register of Ağsaklar village were identified and corrected. In the first part, the geography, demographic structure, and current situation of the village are mentioned. In the second part, information is given about the agricultural production and animal husbandry of Ağsaklar village in 1845. The tax and income situation of Ağsaklar village in the mentioned year is discussed in the third chapter. Aside from that, the occupational groups, agricultural activities, and incomes of the Ağsaklar village population were investigated, and the economic differences among the residents were attempted to be highlighted.
