Sosyal bilimler alanında sekülerleşme ile ilgili tartışmalar genel olarak modern öncesi ve sonrası şeklinde yapılan tarihsel dönemlendirme ve bu dönemler arasında yapılan karşılaştırmalarla gündeme gelmiştir. Karşılaştırmanın doğası gereği bir çatışma/karşıtlık üzerine ikame olunduğu aşikârdır. Nitekim batı siyasi tarihinin şekillenmesinde kurucu bir rol üstlenen modernleşme sürecinin toplumsal etkilerine yönelik açıklamalar, çoklukla bir hegemonya yahut vesayet alanı olarak görülen din kurumundan özerkleşme temelinde ele alınmıştır. Buna göre söz konusu dönemlerin ayracı olarak imlenen modern “akıl”a yüklenilen anlamla birlikte, sürecin işlerlik kazanmasında kutsalın yerini onun karşıtı biçiminde konumlanan profan (din dışı) almaktadır. Zira öte dünya ve bu dünya arasında oluş(turul)an çatışma ilişkisinin gerilimli doğası, sekülerlik bağlamında bu dünya lehine yeni parametreler üretmektedir. Bu durumun toplumsal hayatta, dinin karar alma süreçlerinde bir referans noktası olmaktan çıkması ve pratikte dini tezahür biçimlerinin niceliksel olarak azalması türünde gözlemlenebilir yansımaları bulunabilmektedir. Ancak bu durum evrensel bir izlek sunmadığı gibi farklı toplumlardaki sekülerleşme süreçlerini açıklamaktan yoksundur. Bu bağlamda, batı dışı modernleşme örneklerinden biri olarak Türkiye’de sekülerleşme, batının deneyimlediği ekonomik, siyasal ve sosyo-kültürel tedrici süreçte toplumsal taleplerle değil, yönetsel erkin benimsediği modernleşmeye dayalı ideolojik yönelimin bir ürünü olarak varlık bulmuştur. Dolayısıyla, bu çalışma, sekülerleşme teorisine yönelik eleştirel bir değerlendirmeyi hedeflediği gibi, modernleşmenin doğrusal bir sonucu olarak ele alınan sekülerleşmenin Türkiye toplumunun kendine özgü modernleşme serüvenindeki değişimselliğini tartışmaktadır.

In this context, as one of the examples of non-western modernization, secularization in Turkey has found its existence as a product of the ideological orientation based on modernization, not by social demands in the economic, political and socio-cultural process that the West has experienced, but by the administrative senior adopted. Therefore, as this study aims to a critical assessment of the theory of secularization, it discusses the variability of secularization, which is considered as a linear result of modernization in the Turkish society’s own modernization curve.
