The aim of this study is to search for the frequency of smokingand its relation with physical activity among university students.METHODS: This cross-sectional study was performed by usinga sampling method among 180 university students. The PhysicalActivity Assessment Survey (PAAS) was used to collect the data.An additional questionnaire was used to obtain smoking frequencyand the demographic data of the participants.RESULTS: The smoking frequency was 8.9% among the students.Smokers and non-smokers differed signifi cantly from each otherin the analyses of the parameters like the age, gender, height andbeing involved in the social insurance system (p< 005). Accordingto the physical activity assessing scale (PAAS) stair, PAAS sportand PAAS total variables, physical activity measurements were differentbetween the smokers and non-smokers (p< 0.05). Accordingto the total physical activity score from PAAS, 16 (80%) smokerstudents were sedentary. Binary logistic regression analysis indicatedthat higher levels of physical activity reduced the probabilityof smoking (p< 0.05). Moreover, the male gender increased theprobability of smoking (p< 0.05).CONCLUSION: Smokers among university students have lowerphysical activity levels. This fi nding is a valuable new insight fortargeting and organising school-based smoking control and/orphysical activity programs for the young population.
