Manya Burnu, Mora Yarımadası’nın güneyindeki üç koldan biridir. Dağlık ve sarp bir coğrafyaya sahip olan Manya, bu zorlu coğrafya ile benzerlikler gösteren insanlarıyla da tanınmaktadır. Yeniçağ’da kendini ve dünyayı yeniden keşfe çıkan Batı Avrupa, antik Yunan kültür ve medeniyetinin ayak izlerini sürmeye başlamış ve bu izler onu Manya’ya kadar götürmüştür. 18. yüzyıl itibarıyla Manya hem bir seyahat hem de araştırma konusu olarak cazip hale geldi. Bölgeyi ziyaret eden seyyahların eserlerinde yer alan bilgiler ve izlenimleri, batılı araştırmacıların Manya ve Manyalılara olan ilgisinin artmasına neden oldu. Öte yandan 1770 ve 1821 Mora İsyanlarındaki aktif rollerine karşın ülkemizde bahsi geçen isyanları konu eden çalışmalar hariç Manya ya da Manyalılar özelinde yapılmış herhangi bir araştırma söz konusu değildir. Dolayısıyla makale, literatürdeki bu eksikliği gidermek amacıyla kaleme alınmıştır. Ayrıca bu çalışma, 1821 Yunan Bağımsızlık Savaşı’na giden süreci daha iyi anlama ve analiz edebilme çabasının da bir ürünü olarak değerlendirilebilir. Makale; Osmanlı ile ilişkiler, nüfus, ekonomi ve gündelik hayat başlıkları çerçevesinde konuyu ortaya koymayı amaçlamaktadır. Manya ve Manyalılar, tarih kadar tarihi yazmanın da önemli olduğunu hatırlatan güzel bir örnektir. Çünkü düne kadar korsanları, asileri ve dağlı halkı ile tanınan Manya’nın; Batı yazınında kahramanlık, özgürlük ve vatanseverlik ile anılmaya başlanması, milliyetçilik düşüncesinin gücünü bir kez daha gözler önüne sermektedir.
Cape Mani is one of the three branches in the south of the Peloponnese. Mani, which has a mountainous and steep geography, is also known for it's people who show similarities with it's difficult geography. Western Europe re-discovering itself and the world in the Early Modern Age, started to follow the footsteps of the culture and civilization of ancient Greek and these traces took it all the way to Mani. By the 18th century, Mani became an attractive travel and research subject. Information and impressions in the works of travelers visiting the region caused the interest of western researchers to increase in Mani and Maniates. Mani, which entered the Ottoman administration with the conquest of Morea in the 16th century, is not a topic of great interest for us in terms of research. Their active roles in the Peloponnesian Revolts of 1770 and 1821 may be the main reason for this indifference. There is no research to be found on Mani and Maniates apart from those on the previously mentioned riots. Therefore, the subject of this article is Mani and the Maniates in the 18th century. In addition, this study aims to better understand and analyze the process leading to the Greek War of Independence in 1821. The article aims to present the subject within the framework of relations with the Ottoman population, economy and daily life. Mani and the Maniates is a great example for reminding that writing history is as important as history itself. Because Mani's beginning to be mentioned with heroism, freedom and patriotism in Western literature while it was known for its pirates, rebels and mountain people until recently, once again reveals the power of the idea of nationalism.
