INTRODUCTION: The incidence of end stage renal disease (ESRD) causes psycho-social problems on the patients and reduces their life quality. In this study, our purpose is to determine anxiety, dep METHODS: We applied Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HAD) and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) on randomly chosen 85 hemodialysis patients, who are being monitored regularly in our hemodialysis center. In this study, we used NCSS 2007 software for statistical analysis. While evaluating data, together with descriptive statistical methods, we also used one-way analysis of variance to make comparison among the groups and Tukey multiple comparative test for sub-groups. RESULTS: Patients group was consisted of 53 males and 32 females in this study. The mean age of the group was 56.5±15.2 (between 24-81 years). The mean HAD total score of the group, who were greater than 60 years old when they were diagnosed as ESRD, was meaningfully greater than the group, who were under 30 years old when they were diagnosed as ESRD (p=0.036). The mean HAD total score of the group, which have the illness for ≥10 years, was meaning fully greater than the group of which have the illness for <5 years (p=0.006). Meaningful differences were observed between the mean MSPSS Family Support total scores of the groups which have the illness for <5 years, 5–10 years and ≥10 years. The mean MSPSS Family Support total score of the ≥10 years group was meaningfully greater than <5 years and 5–10 years groups (in the order of p=0.001, p=0.003). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: It is also important to evaluate hemodialysis patients according to psycho-social perspective, as evaluating them according to their clinical evidences. Because, by this way, anxiety or depression, that causes negatif effects on life quality, can be recognized with easy to operative scales in a short-term and by psycho-social support, life quality of the patients can be increased.
