Abstract:

Production process with ceramic material involves direct contact with the material. Ceramic clay responds and reacts to every touch due to its nature and carries traces of every intervention. In this process the touch of the artist would inevitably appear on the surface of the work at the stage of hand shaping. In this study, by adopting the point of view that the bond established with the material is the source of art production, the fingerprint texture that emerges due to production in hand-shaped contemporary ceramic works is researched. Focusing on the fingerprints that formed during the production and shaping processes, the works in which the traces are added after the shaping phase are excluded from the scope. The study seeks an answer to the question of what is the meaning, concept and function of the fingerprint on the ceramic surface from the perspective of production, texture and perception. It was assumed that the fingerprint could be an identity mark belonging to the material and its shaper, or a decor item due to the texture it creates, but in the evaluation made on the examples, it was concluded that it carries much different expressions than these above. In addition, when current works are examined, a common visual language in recent artist productions can be seen.
