Oğuz Atay Cumhuriyet döneminin önde gelen roman, hikâye ve oyun yazarıdır. Modernizmden postmodernizme kadar uzanan yeni roman anlayışının öncülerindendir. Eserlerinde seçtiği kişiler, konular, mekânlar ve zamansal boşluk ifadeleri onun bireylerin psikolojik açıdan düştükleri durumu göstermektedir. Oğuz Atay romanlarında ve hikâyelerinde görünenin arkasında bir gerçeklik olduğunu sezdirmiş ve bunu gerek kullandığı mekânlarla gerekse kahramanların ruh tahlilleriyle vermiştir. Bir tutunamama ve soyutlanma barındıran eserlerinde yazar ironiyi kullanmıştır. Eserlerde ironi çatışma, çelişki ve kabullenememe olarak kendini gösterir. Gerçek ve hayalin, iyi ve kötünün çatışması, bu durumdan da kahramanların ruhsal açıdan etkilenmesi, hikâye ve romanlarda seçilen mekânlarla ilintilidir. İroninin yanında eserlerde ince alay ve hiciv unsurlarına da başvurulmuştur. Toplumdaki yabancılaşmayı kabul edemeyen kahramanın zaman zaman intihara kalkışması da bir kaçış olarak değerlendirilmiştir. Buradaki kaçış insanın kendi beninden doğaya sığınması ya da tam tersi olarak doğadan kendi benine sarılması şeklinde görülür. Bu eserde kahramanlar genel olarak alışılmış kalıpların dışındadır, kabullenilmiş yaşayışın dışında, kimliğini kaybeden, arayış içinde, dengesiz ve en sonunda toplumdan uzaklaşan birer figür olarak verilmiştir. İroninin temsilcilerinden olan Oğuz Atay ironi ile gidişatın dışına çıkarak, metinde aykırılıklar yaparak dikkat çekmiş olur. Yazar kullandığı mekân tasvirlerinde genelde hayattan uzakta, kendi bireyselliğini yaşayabilen insanın bulunduğu alanları ele almıştır. Bu mekânlar aynı zamanda izole olan hayatların birer sembol ve metafor olarak ifade edilmesidir.
