OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine the critical thinking levels of students studying in midwifery associate degree program and to identify the factors affecting students’ critical thinking abilities. METHODS: 149 out of 251 total students studying in School of Health-Midwifery Department of Mersin University were involved in the study. The data were collected using the survey prepared by the researchers and the California Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory (CCTDI). SPSS 11.5 was used for statistical analysis. The Shapiro-Wilk test was used to determine if the continuous variables were normally distributed. One Way ANOVA test was used for continuous variables. RESULTS: It was found that 69 % of the students who took part in the study were between 18 and 22, 71 % of the students graduated from regular high schools and that mothers of 69 % of the students and fathers of 65% received only primary school education. The critical thinking average score of the participants was found as 199 ± 22. CONCLUSION: We found that 94% of the participants had low level of critical thinking skills and that some demographic characteristics affected their critical thinking abilities.
