Ara nesil sanatçısı olan Mehmet Vecihî, otuz beş yıllık bir ömrüne pek çok eser sığdırmıştır. Yazar roman, hikâye, şiir, manzum oyun, manzum tarih türünde eserler de vermiştir. Roman ve hikâyelerinde aile, kadın, çok eşli evlilik gibi ana konuları ele alan Mehmet Vecihî, Halime adlı uzun hikâyesinde çok eşli evliliğin kadın üzerindeki etkisini işler. Eserde bu sorunlara bağlı olarak yoksulluk, yozlaşma, aile, kadın, ihanet, üvey annelik gibi sorunlara da yer verilir. Eser, bir olay hikâyesidir ve olaylar rastlantılara göre şekillenir. Vecihî, anlatıda yer yer ahlâkçı tutum benimseyerek okuru yönlendirir. Halime’deki kurgusal dünyanın kişileri iyiler ve kötüler şeklinde bir zıtlıkla yer alırlar. Bu zıtlıkta kötüler trajik bir sonu deneyimleyerek âdeta cezalandırılırlar. Bir öykü kişisi olarak Halime edilgen ve güçsüz bir kadındır. Halime, dönemin toplumsal gerçekliklerinden biri olan çok eşli evliliği sorgulamak ve toplumun ekonomik durumunu göstermek için seçilen bir tiptir. Hikâyede çok eşli evlilik ve yoksulluk Halime adlı kadının dramı olarak gösterilse de arka planda toplumun sosyal bir sorunu olarak verilmek istenir. Halime, farklı çalışmalarda bahsedilmekle birlikte üzerinde yeteri kadar durulmamış bir eserdir. Bu çalışmada Halime adlı eserin yapı ve tema bakımından çözümlemesi yapılmıştır. Çalışmadaki amaç, 19. yüzyılın son çeyreğindeki toplumsal ve ekonomik sorunların Türk kadını ve erkeği üzerindeki olumsuz etkilerini belirlemektir.
Mehmet Vecihî, who is an intermediate generation artist, has produced many works in his thirty-five-year life. The author has also produced works in the genres of novels, stories, poems, verse plays, and verse history. Vecihi, who deals with the main subjects such as family, woman and polygamous marriage in his novels and stories, deals with the suffering caused by polygamous marriage on women in his long story Halime. Depending on these problems, the work also includes problems such as women, poverty, family, corruption, betrayal, stepmotherhood. The work is a story of events and events take shape according to coincidences. Vecihî guides the reader by adopting a moralistic attitude from time to time in the narrative. The characters of the fictional world in Halime are determined as the good and the bad. In this contrast, the wicked found their punishment by experiencing a tragic end. As a story character, Halime is a passive and powerless woman. Halime is a type chosen to question polygamous marriage and show the economic status of the society one of the social realities of the period. Although polygamous marriage is shown as the drama of a woman named Halime in the story, it is desired to be presented as a social problem of the society in the background. Although Halime is mentioned in different studies, it has not been investigated enough. In this study, the work called Halime was analyzed in terms of structure and theme. The aim of the study is to determine the negative effects of social and economic problems in the last quarter of the 19th century on Turkish women and men.
