Abstract:

Aim: To shedlight on the contribution of intervening in anxiety and depression which accompanies treating somatic diseases to the effectiveness of treatment. Material and Methods: In this retrospective study, 20 patients with fibromyalgia syndrome and 20 age- and gender-matched control group were recruited. Questionnaries of Hospital Anxiety Depression by the patients under treatment in the Physical Medicine and Reheabilitation clinic and the hospital personell were compared retrospectively. Results: The mean age of individuals in patient and control groups were found to be 47.45±11.33 year and 45.80±13.47 year, respectively and there was no statistically significant difference (p=0.677). Compared to Body Mass Index (BMI) scores of the patients and control group there was no statistically significant differences (p=0.052). Compared to the control group, the anxiety and depression scores of the patients were determined to be significantly higher in statistical terms (p<0.001, p=0.001, respectively). Conclusion: The incidence of anxiety and depression in somatic diseases is frequent; thus, early diagnosis is required as well as taking it into consideration in treatment
