This study aimed to determine the current situation and the sustainability of tourism in Çanakkale, one of the most popular tourist attractions, within the process of creating a sustainable tourism destination. In this regard, a qualitative study was conducted through interviewing the stakeholders connected with tourism in Çanakkale. It was anticipated that the interviews held would reveal the stakeholders’ views on the current situation of tourism in the city, the destination structure to be created and in the city center of Çanakkale and its organization within the context of developing a sustainable destination in the city. The study benefited from the interview technique using semi-structured questionnaire forms. The study was also supported by document analysis. Within the scope of the study, 24 stakeholders were interviewed, including the central government, local government, private sector, civil society organizations, and other categories. According to the findings of the study, the general view is that tourism in Çanakkale is not at the desired level due to various reasons although Çanakkale has a high tourism potential. Lack of organization is considered one of the most important reasons for this by the stakeholders that participated in the study. Furthermore, according to the stakeholders, it is necessary that a destination management organization be established and the central government should help this management in terms of leadership and financial resources
