In countries like Turkey, where the youth population percentage is high but the higher education prospects are limited, university and college admission exams are of great importance; because of its impacts on the secondary education or even on earlier stages. Because of this vital importance, "transition to higher education" is one of the hottest topics on education in Turkey. In order to fully understand what was experienced in the transition from secondary education to higher education (in history and nowadays) and to create rational solutions for the future; it's crucial to know the history of the system applied for university admissions. In the article, after giving some summary on the system of transition to higher education in Turkey, the successful aspects and the shortcomings of the current system is evaluated. And after this analysis, specific recommendations are presented under the topic: new pursuits, supported by supply/demand data.
